The Correlation Dimension of Young Stars in Dwarf Galaxies

چکیده

We present the correlation dimension of resolved young stars in four actively star-forming dwarf galaxies that are sufficiently resolved and transparent to be modeled as projections of three-dimensional point distributions. We use data in the Hubble Space Telescope archive; photometry for one of them, UGCA 292, is presented here for the first time. We find that there are statistically distinguishable differences in the nature of stellar clustering among the sample galaxies. The young stars of VII Zw 403, the brightest galaxy in the sample, have the highest value for the correlation dimension and also the most dramatic decrease with logarithmic scale, falling from 1.68 ± 0.14 to 0.10 ± 0.05 over less than a factor of ten in r. This decrease is consistent with the edge effect produced by a projected Poisson distribution within a 2:2:1 ellipsoid. The young stars in UGC 4483, the faintest galaxy in the sample, exhibit very different behavior, with a constant value of about 0.5 over this same range in r, extending nearly to the edge of the distribution. This behavior may indicate either a scale-free distribution with an unusually low correlation dimension, or a two-component (not scale-free) combination of cluster and field stars. Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

Young Globular Clusters and Dwarf Spheroidals

Most of the globular clusters in the main body of the Galactic halo were formed almost simultaneously. However, globular cluster formation in dwarf spheroidal galaxies appears to have extended over a significant fraction of a Hubble time. This suggests that the factors which suppressed late-time formation of globulars in the main body of the Galactic halo were not operative in dwarf spheroidal ...

Are Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies Dark Matter Dominated or Remnants of Disrupted Larger Satellite Galaxies? – a Possible Test

The failure of standard cosmolocical models in accounting for the statistics of dwarf satellites and the rotation curve of gas-rich dwarf galaxies in detail has led us to examine whether earlier non-equilibrium models of dwarf spheroidal satellites without any dark matter should be reconsidered in more detail. Such models can explain the high dispersion of the dwarf spheroids by the projection ...

Young Dwarf Galaxies and Cosmology

We develop here the theme that extremely metal-deficient Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxies (BCDs), those with Z ≤ Z⊙/20, are young galaxies which did not start to form stars until ∼ 100 Myr ago. They can be thus considered as primeval galaxies in our local volume of the universe, and are excellent laboratories for studying physical processes occuring at the time of galaxy formation in very metal-defi...

A Study of Edge-on Galaxies with the Hubble Space Telescope’s Advanced Camera for Surveys. I. Initial Results

We present the initial results of a Hubble Space Telescope/ACS snapshot survey of 16 nearby, edgeon, late-type galaxies covering a range in distance from 2 to 19 Mpc. The images of these galaxies show significant resolved stellar populations. We derive F606W and F814W photometry for >1.2 million stars, and present color-magnitude diagrams which show a mixture of young, intermediate, and old sta...
